The summit that started a sport

On 8 August 1786, Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard reached the top of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. They climbed without ropes or crampons, carrying a barometer to measure the altitude, and arrived at the summit shortly after six in the evening. The ascent answered a prize the naturalist Horace-Bénédict de Saussure had offered more than twenty years earlier, and it is generally treated as the founding event of modern mountaineering.

Why this oneMountaineering has a founding date, and a cash prize behind it.

The clock that ran on water

Ctesibius of Alexandria rebuilt the water clock around a simple problem: a draining tank empties fastest when it is full, so the hours it marks are uneven. He added a second vessel held at a constant level, which let water trickle out at a steady rate and lift a float that pointed at the hour. Nothing kept time more accurately until the pendulum clock, roughly nineteen centuries later.

Why this oneA fix for uneven hours that held the accuracy record for nineteen centuries.

Themedc. 150Mapping the world

Ptolemy drew the world as a list of numbers

The Geography, compiled in Alexandria around 150 CE, gave latitude and longitude for some eight thousand places, along with instructions for projecting a curved earth onto a flat sheet. The maps that came with it did not survive; the tables did. When the text reached Europe again in the fifteenth century by way of Arabic and Byzantine copies, cartographers redrew the world from the coordinates.

Why this oneThe map was reconstructed from a list. The drawing was the disposable part.
