An Anglo-Dutch fleet under George Rooke landed at Gibraltar on 1 August 1704, and the garrison, a few dozen men facing thousands, surrendered on 4 August. The place was taken in the name of the Habsburg claimant to the Spanish throne, in a war fought over who should inherit it. The claimant never got Spain, and Gibraltar was ceded to Britain by treaty nine years later.
